Jun 02, 2017· I'm descended from quite a lot of people who worked as coal miners, originally in South Wales, and in Pennsylvania around Scranton. One of my father's uncles was a mine inspector, the guy who would go down at the beginning of a shift to check for gas or other unpleasantness. The only reason I ever met him was that he had happened to stay home on the day the mine blew up.
